Fall, 1996 – American Home Style Magazine, featured kitchen, "The Butler Did It", pp. 82-85
Butler’s pantries may not be as prevalent as they once were, but the look – now a style unto itself – is spreading like wildfire. And why not? Combine painted cabinets and stone countertops with up-to-the-minute appliances and amenities, and you get vintage charm and newfangled efficiency at the same time. In terms of both style and substance, those were precisely the qualities Kathy and Raymond Rodriguez wanted for their 1894 Colonial Revival home in Philadelphia. Blue Bell kitchens responded with a thoroughly modern floor plan, carved out of the old kitchen and several adjacent closet size spaces, that revolves around a 31/2 x 7 foot island, and a thoroughly cozy look framed by headboard backsplashes and a floor of antique pine. The island was outfitted with a vegetable sink, opposite a serious cook’s range; it’s granite top is ideal for pastry making. Other countertops were fabricated from Vermont soapstone. It’s a natural material with a matte finish that doesn’t have to be babied. Scratches can be sanded out and re-oiled – but they actually give it character. Just the thing for a room laden with pantry-style panache. |
